FLINDERS SHIRE COUNCIL IN CLEAN-UP MODE FOLLOWING FLOODS

MEDIA RELEASE -
FLINDERS SHIRE COUNCIL IN CLEAN-UP MODE FOLLOWING FLOODS
Written by Mayor Jane McNamara
21 March 2019

Flinders Shire Council crews have been working around the clock following the North Queensland Monsoon trough to ensure local and regional roads are repaired as quickly as possible.

Due to recent weather events, a large portion of our unsealed road network have been significantly damaged and council crews are now tasked with repairing our damaged networks to ensure motorist safety.

Council have already completed inspections on 1570km of the Network (49 roads), of which emergent works were completed on 555.44 km (17 roads) of the network and additional repair works are still in progress.

Mayor Jane McNamara said ensuring residents and visitors have access to safe and high quality local roads is our top priority.

“Our council crews have been actively monitoring our roads fixing and repairing any damage to the road network stemming from the recent floods,” Mayor McNamara said

“Our recovery process involves various stages, from determining which roads require immediate access or priority access, which roads require major reconstruction to restore the assets to pre-existing standard, identify various road infrastructure assets such as floodways and culverts that require rehabilitation works.

“These improvements are critical to provide safe and high quality local roads across our road network.

“We will also continue clearing storm drains and removing tree debris from roads and parks that came down as a result of the strong winds.

“Council thanks the community for their patience while the clean-up is underway.

“We know road works can be disruptive to motorists so we appreciate the community’s patience while this important and necessary work is underway.

“As always we also urge people to drive carefully, drive to the road conditions and follow the road signage.”

To report any weather related damage to our road network, please contact council’s customer contact centre on 4741 2900, email flinders@flinders.qld.gov.au  or visit www.flinders.qld.gov.au.
