Flinders Shire announces 2024 Australia Day Ambassador

Flinders Shire Council is delighted to announce Peter Davis as its Australia Day Ambassador for 2024.

Peter, the founder of Blood Bikes Australia, was honoured as a Queensland Local Hero nominee for the prestigious 2023 Australian of the Year Awards.

Several years ago, Peter launched Blood Bikes Australia, a volunteer-led brigade of motorcyclists devoted to ferrying critical blood and medical supplies between hospitals at no cost.

By eliminating transportation expenses, Peter's initiative redirected vital funds towards bolstering other essential healthcare services.

"Peter epitomises the true essence of community service and dedication,” said Flinders Shire Mayor Jane McNamara.

“His initiative, Blood Bikes Australia, stands as a testament to his compassion and unwavering commitment to supporting healthcare services.

"His vision and tireless efforts in facilitating the free transport of vital medical supplies resonate deeply with our values of selflessness and community spirit."

From its humble beginnings with Peter making deliveries solo in Brisbane, Blood Bikes Australia has flourished to encompass a network of 500 qualified volunteers spanning across Australia.

Peter and his team of dedicated riders have undertaken over 5,000 urgent pick-ups and deliveries, covering more than 500,000 kilometres.

Their missions have been diverse, including the transportation of life-saving blood, biopsies, COVID tests, corneas for transplant, stem cells, clinical trial tests, and patients' personal items.

Peter's long-term vision is to expand the utilisation of Blood Bikes Australia, saving more lives and redirecting healthcare resources efficiently.

The Australia Day Ambassador Program, renowned for its celebration of outstanding individuals across various domains, proudly welcomes Peter as a shining example of the program's ethos.

These ambassadors, drawn from diverse fields such as sports, science, business, entertainment, and community service, inspire and instill pride within communities through their remarkable contributions.
