Flinders Shire Australia Day 2024 Awards honour outstanding community contributions

The Flinders Shire community came together on Australia Day last week to celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions of its citizens at the Flinders Shire Australia Day 2024 Awards

Despite the challenges posed by Tropical Cyclone Kirrily and the rain, more than 80 resilient individuals gathered to honour the recipients of this year's prestigious awards.

The awards ceremony recognised individuals and organisations who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and service to the Flinders Shire community.

The esteemed winners of the Flinders Shire Australia Day 2024 Awards were:

  • Senior Citizen of The Year: Brenda Townley
  • Community Event of The Year: Hughenden Railway Social Club Inc
  • Senior Sports Person of The Year: Suzy Paine
  • Junior Sports Person of The Year: Jakeb Sladden
  • Southern Gulf NRM Sarus Crane Award: Flinders Canine Obedience and Agility Club.

Flinders Shire Mayor Jane McNamara expressed her gratitude and admiration for both the winners and nominees, emphasising their invaluable impact on the community's social fabric.

"I am delighted to congratulate all the recipients of the Flinders Shire Australia Day 2024 Awards,” she said.

“Their unwavering commitment and passion have enriched the lives of countless individuals in our community, and we thank them for their contributions to make Flinders Shire the greatest place to live.

"Their achievements reflect the spirit of unity and resilience that defines the Flinders Shire community."

In addition to celebrating individual accomplishments, the ceremony also honoured businesses which demonstrated exceptional support during challenging times.

On behalf of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, certificates of appreciation were also presented to:

  • Flinders Butchery
  • Holden’s Bakery
  • Hughenden Foodworks.

"These businesses exemplify the spirit of community solidarity and support, especially during the challenging period of the Flinders Shire fires last year," said Cr McNamara.
