Christmas Feast To Warm July Chill

NOTHING says Christmas like sitting around a fireplace rugged up sipping eggnog and eating pudding – except if you live in Australia, where Christmas Day usually means searing temperatures and sunburn.
There is little wonder then that the idea of `Christmas in July’ has become popular in countries like Australia, giving those in the southern hemisphere the chance to mimic the winter-themed celebrations.
And in the Flinders Shire the idea has really caught on, with up to 150 guests from Hughenden and neighbouring towns enjoying the annual festivities.
The `Christmas in July’ lunch is hosted by the Community Care Program and is held on July 11 from 11am at the Diggers Entertainment Centre.
Community Care Administration Officer Sara Haydon said there were always lots of fun and laughs on the day.
``Christmas in July was first trialled in 2004, but then it wasn’t held again until 2008. It has been held every year since,’’ she said.
``We deck the hall in full Christmas theme.
``We started the event for our clients and their friends in neighbouring towns.
``The clients love catching up with old friends and they really love the raffles that are donated to us from the businesses around Hughenden.
``We get about 150 guests now…the event has really grown.
``Everyone is welcome.’’
The menu is like a typical Christmas, with roast and plum pudding.
