From the Mayor’s Desk – June 15th 2020

Commendations to all Community Members for their vigilance during the Covid19 Pandemic and I am pleased to advise that restrictions are being lifted gradually. Yesterday the Western travel protocol was lifted for Contractors and Government officials to commence working within the Outback Shires and Region. We would like to remind all Community Members to adhere to the big 3 of hand hygiene, social distancing and stay home if people are unwell.

Due to the Covid19 restrictions being lifted Council has reopened the Caravan Park, RV Park, Library & the Flinders Discovery Centre. I would like to thank all Staff for their diligence in adhering to the health requirements in relation to the operation of these Council facilities.

Gray Street upgrade and rehabilitation project has been commenced. We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this project, which has been 3 years in the planning and is being driven by Transport and Main Roads in partnership with Flinders Shire Council. I would like to ask the Community for your patience and perseverance during construction.

Gray Street is the major arterial road connecting the Hann Highway with the Flinders Highway. This had meant that we must undertake major rehabilitation and upgrading to accommodate the increase in heavy transport which will occur as a result of this Highway being sealed. You will have noticed over time that the structural integrity of this road has meant regular patching repairs were required. Once the project was commenced it became rapidly apparent that there was significant structural problems caused by  100 years of construction/patching methods, this included water penetration from having trees on the centre medium strip. In order to rectify the water issue the trees had to be removed. Removal of Power poles was necessary to give proper access for seamless construction of the new solid foundations and overall structural integrity of the Gray Street upgrade project.

As visitors return to our Shire please make them feel welcome with your Outback hospitality. We have much to share and would love for these tourists to recommend Hughenden and the Flinders Shire as a welcoming Community. Please make sure you recommend our Local Businesses, Services and Attractions. Hughenden Recreational Lake and adjoining footpath network and parks are a wonderful opportunity for both Locals and Visitors to enjoy.

As always if Community members have any thoughts, recommendations and issues that you wish to discuss please contact me on 0429 417 115 or alternatively via email at .

Warmest regards

Mayor Jane McNamara
