The 2026 Hughenden Festival of Outback Skies has wrapped up as the biggest and most successful in the event's history, with a record crowd of more than 3,500 people flocking to Hughenden over the weekend.

Now in its fourth year, the Festival has firmly established itself as one of Queensland's premier regional events -- drawing visitors from across the state and beyond to experience the unique magic of Hughenden.

From the action-packed Bull Ride and Bronc Riding on opening night to the spectacular Festival Finale featuring internationally renowned didgeridoo virtuoso and composer William Barton alongside the Townsville Great Barrier Reef Orchestra, the 2026 program set a new benchmark for the event.

The world premiere performance of Barton's newly commissioned work -- staged under the vast outback sky and brought to the program through Council’s partnership with Queensland Music Trails – was a landmark cultural moment for the region, giving the Hughenden community access to a world-class orchestral experience unlike anything seen here before.

The sold-out Dinner Under the Stars returned in spectacular fashion, while the beloved Yirendali cultural performance, hands-on workshops, the Art Competition, and the Saturday Night Barn Dance kept the community and visitors buzzing across all three days.

Flinders Shire Mayor Kate Peddle said the 2026 Festival exceeded all expectations.

"This year's Festival was truly something special -- and the response from our community and visitors has been overwhelming," said Mayor Peddle.

"To host the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by William Barton, performed alongside the Townsville Great Barrier Reef Orchestra, right here in Hughenden -- that is something we will talk about for years to come.

"But beyond the headline acts, what makes this Festival so extraordinary is the people.

“Our volunteers, our community groups, our sponsors, and every single person who came through the gates -- you are what makes this event what it is.

"To our travelling visitors -- we know the journey to Hughenden this year came with its extra challenges, and we are deeply grateful you kept us on your itinerary.”

Mayor Peddle also acknowledged the Yirendali cultural performance as a highlight of the Sunday program.

"The Yirendali performance continues to be one of the most moving and memorable moments of the Festival," she said.

"We are so grateful for the ongoing partnership and the stories shared with our community."

Council is continuing to receive glowing feedback from attendees, with many commenting on the welcoming atmosphere, the quality of the program, and the smooth running of the event.

The Festival was made possible through the generous support of sponsors and funding partners, including Platinum Sponsors Tourism and Events Queensland, Arts Queensland, Southern Cross Austereo, and Iberdrola Australia.

The Festival is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and Tourism and Events Queensland.

Council extends a heartfelt thank you to every volunteer, performer, organiser, sponsor, and visitor who helped bring the 2026 Festival to life.
