Countdown is on! 2 weeks to go until biggest ever Hughenden Festival
Published on 17 April 2026
Flinders Shire Council is gearing up for one of its biggest events yet, with the countdown officially on for the 2026 Hughenden Festival of Outback Skies (1-3 May) – and all signs pointing to a record-breaking year.
With the wet season now behind the region, roads are open, fuel supplies are strong, and Hughenden is primed and ready to welcome visitors from across Queensland and beyond.
Despite ongoing cost-of-living pressures and broader economic factors, ticket sales for the 2026 Festival are already exceeding last year’s figures, positioning this year’s event to be the biggest and most successful to date.
Flinders Shire Mayor Kate Peddle said the lead-up to the 2026 Festival had generated an extraordinary level of excitement.
"People have been planning this trip for months, and the numbers speak for themselves – ticket sales are exceeding last year at the same point, and we couldn't be more thrilled with the response," said Mayor Peddle.
"The roads are open, the bowsers are full, and Hughenden is ready.
“Whatever challenges people might be facing day to day, we know the Festival offers something truly special – a chance to get away, connect with community, and experience something you simply can't find anywhere else."
The 2026 program is shaping up to be the best yet. Headline acts include the world premiere performance of a newly commissioned work by internationally renowned didgeridoo virtuoso and composer William Barton, performed alongside the Townsville Great Barrier Reef Orchestra – a landmark cultural moment for the region.
The Bull Ride and Bronc Riding return on opening night, along with the Dinner Under the Stars, Art Competition, hands-on workshops, the Saturday Night Barn Dance, and the beloved Yirendali cultural performance on the Sunday night.
Tickets are still available for most events, including the flagship Dinner Under the Stars.
Campsites – including unpowered sites and glamping options – are also still available, though demand is strong and visitors are urged to book soon.
"There is still time to secure your spot, but we encourage people not to wait," Mayor Peddle said.
"Get your tickets, book your accommodation, and head out to Hughenden – the Outback skies are waiting."
Mayor Peddle also paid tribute to the local community for their unwavering support.
“Our community knows better than anyone how vital events like this are to our identity and our region’s wellbeing,” she said. “To see the pride and energy our locals and volunteers pour into this Festival – particularly through some challenging times – means everything to us. We are truly grateful for their support.”
