Flinders Shire Mayor Kate Peddle has joined fellow North West Queensland leaders in Brisbane this week as part of a joint delegation advocating for regional priorities with senior members of the Queensland Government.

The delegation, coordinated through the North West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (NWQROC), brought mayors and councillors together to meet with a number of Ministers and senior government representatives to discuss key issues affecting communities across the North West, including:

  • infrastructure
  • Housing
  • regional connectivity
  • education
  • biosecurity
  • emergency services, and
  • economic development.

Mayor Peddle said the visit provided an important opportunity to ensure the needs of the Flinders community were represented directly with decision-makers.

“Advocating for our community is one of the most important parts of local government, and these face-to-face meetings with Ministers allow us to highlight the priorities that matter most to Flinders Shire,” Mayor Peddle said.

During the delegation, council representatives met with several senior members of the Queensland Government including Premier David Crisafulli, Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie, and Treasurer David Janetzki.

The delegation also met with:

  • John-Paul Langbroek, Minister for Education and the Arts
  • Daniel Purdie, Minister for Police and Emergency Services
  • Deb Frecklington, Attorney-General
  • Samuel O’Connor, Minister for Housing and Public Works and Minister for Youth
  • Tony Perrett, Minister for Primary Industries
  • Brent Mickelberg, Minister for Transport and Main Roads, and
  • Andrew Powell, Minister for the Environment and Tourism and Minister for Science and Innovation.

Mayor Peddle said the discussions focused on strengthening regional communities and ensuring the North West continues to receive the investment and policy support needed to grow.

“By working together through NWQROC, North West councils can advocate more strongly for the investment needed in infrastructure, services and regional development,” she said.

The two-day delegation also included briefings and presentations from state agencies and regional organisations, including discussions around major projects in North West Queensland, biosecurity, regulated routes, regional connectivity initiatives, and Western Queensland collaboration.

Mayor Peddle said Council would continue working with government and regional partners to deliver positive outcomes for Flinders Shire residents.

“Our message to government is clear – strong regional communities are vital to Queensland’s future, and investment in the North West benefits the entire state.”
