Nominations 

Nominations will be opened in December 2020.  All nomination forms will be available online.
Due to the effects of COVID on regular activities such as community events and sporting opportunities, there are changes to the categories for this year.  
 

Citizen Of The Year Award

This award is presented to an individual who has made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years.  Service to the community can be made through civic participation, sports excellence or other noteworthy contributions.  To be eligible, the person must be 27 years or older as at 31 December 2020.
 

Junior Citizen Of The Year Award

This award is presented to an individual who has made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years.  Service to the community can be made through civic participation, sports excellence or other noteworthy contributions.  To be eligible, the person must be under the age of 27 as at 31 December 2020.
 

Community Volunteer of the Year Award 

This award is presented to an individual or organisation who have made an outstanding contributions in our community.  The award will acknowledge the extraordinary people and organisations in our community who have helped make Flinders Shire a thriving and diverse community.  
 

Local Hero of the Year Award 

This award is present to an individual who gone above and beyond the call of duty of help the community.  This might be in a voluntary capacity or exceeding in the normal requirements of a person’s paid work.  
 

Southern Gulf NRM Sarus Crane Award

Awarded to an individual, group, organisation or school that demonstrates significant contribution to the fields of land management and/or the environment.  
 
 

Conditions of Entry

CLOSING DATE: 11 January 2021 

  • Hard copy applications will not be accepted, all nominations must be completed online.  
  • Nominations will be assessed by an Australia Day Awards Panel which comprises representatives from the broader community and Councillors.  The decision of the Australia Day Awards Panel is final and no correspondence will be entered into in regards to their decision.
  • Previous Citizen of the Year (Senior and Junior) winners cannot be re-nominated for the same award; however, a repeat award may be made in exceptional circumstances. In this case, particular consideration will be given to work/volunteerism undertaken since the last time the person was awarded – the award should not be given twice in recognition of the same work.
  • Individuals and groups who have won a Sports or Community Event Award cannot be nominated for two consecutive years in a row; however, they can be nominated in the third year.
  • All accepted nominees are advised by letter of their nomination and invited to the Australia Day Ceremony.  All accepted nominees are recognised at the Ceremony
  • Award Winners are kept confidential until the official announcement.
  • Announcements will be made and awards presented at a ceremony on Australia Day 2021.  
 

How To Complete Your Nomination

When you fill out the online nomination form, there are a few things you should consider to ensure your nomination provides us with enough information about the achievements of the person you are nominating. Here are some hints to help you get started:
  • Fill out as much of the form as possible. Even if you do not know the person you are nominating well, try to provide as much detail as you can. Each section is scored out of a set number of points.
  • Include any supporting documentation with your nomination. This can include personal references, portfolios, resumes, newspaper articles, etc.
  • Please do not nominate the same person more than once for the same award. Recipients are selected based on selection criteria, rather than the number of times they are nominated.

 

Australia Day 2021 – Opportunities for Businesses and Community Groups 

 

Expressions of Interest – Catering – Morning Tea

Flinders Shire Council requests expressions of interest from community groups and businesses for the catering of a formal morning tea on Tuesday, 26 January 2021 for approx. 100 people.
Caterers would need to provide a selection of sweet and savoury morning tea options (pastries, sandwiches, fruit etc.) to the Diggers Entertainment Centre at 9.30am. 
Service, cutlery, crockery, tea, coffee and juice will not be required to be included in your quote. 
Expressions of interest including a quote per head and menu outline, should be submitted to the Chief Executive Officer, Flinders Shire Council, PO Box 274, Hughenden, Q, 4821 or emailed to sportandrec@flinders.qld.gov.au and be received by 23 December 2020.

Expressions of Interest – Food Vendors – Community Event 

Flinders Shire Council requests expressions of interest from interested food vendors to attend a community event being held at the Hughenden Recreational Lake on Tuesday, 26 January 21 from 4pm to 7pm.  Crowd numbers are difficult to anticipate however initial thoughts are 250 patrons.  Food vendors will be required to provide their own power if required.  Expressions of interest are to be submitted to the Chief Executive Officer, Flinders Shire Council, PO Box 274, Hughenden, Q, 4821 or emailed to history@flinders.qld.gov.au and be received by 23 December 2020.

Expressions of Interest – Provision of Activities – Community Event 

Flinders Shire Council requests expressions of interest from interested community groups to provide suitable activities as part of the Australia Day Community Event at the Hughenden Recreational Lake on Tuesday, 26 January 2021 from 4pm to 7pm.  Selected community groups will receive a donation for their assistance.  Community groups will be responsible for the provision of any equipment or goods required and supervision of the activities.  Examples of activities may include lamington eating contest or thong throwing competition.  Expressions of interest including an outline of planned activities are to be submitted to the Chief Executive Officer, Flinders Shire Council, PO Box 274, Hughenden, Q, 4821 or emailed to history@flinders.qld.gov.au and be received by 23 December 2020.
