Flinders Shire welcomes two new Aussies

The Flinders Shire welcomed two new citizens at an Australian citizenship ceremony on Saturday (17 September), as part of Australian Citizenship Day celebrations.

Mayfifth Alexander and Nathalie Grimmer, from the Philippines and Germany respectively, became Australian citizens as part of a ceremony at the Council Chambers in Hughenden.

Mayor Jane McNamara said the ceremony was one of hundreds of ceremonies taking place across Australia that saw thousands of people officially become new citizens on or around Australian Citizenship Day.

“Australian Citizenship Day is an opportunity for all Australians in their community, whether by birth or by choice, to reflect on and celebrate what’s great about being Australian,” Mayor McNamara said.

Australian Citizenship Day provides an occasion for individuals, schools, community organisations and organisations to reflect on the contributions of citizens to our local communities.

“I encouraged everyone in the Flinders Shire to reflect on and affirm their Australian citizenship as we warmly welcomed our newest citizens,” Mayor McNamara said.

“And finally, a big thank you to our local school students who wrote letters to our two newest citizens, welcoming them to our community and congratulating them on their Australian Citizenship.”
