Council launches new plans to set future direction of Flinders Shire

Flinders Shire Council has launched two important new plans to set the future economic development and strategic direction of the region.

The Economic Development Strategy sets a clear direction for Council to ensure that economic development is at its core, and includes a comprehensive action plan with a full range of activities to ensure success.

The Corporate Plan 2023-2028 describes strategic issues facing Council, linking programs, objectives and related strategies into a rolling five-year plan that will be used as a base for the Council’s Operational Plan and Budget each year.

Flinders Shire Council Mayor Jane McNamara said the Economic Development Strategy was a crucial component in ensuring Council takes advantage of future growth opportunities.

“The Flinders Shire is a place of enormous opportunity,” she said.

“Recent changes around the globe and in Australia have provided our community with a new growth horizon.

“Both our traditional industries such as cattle, rail, transport and tourism, and new industries such as renewable energy, health and irrigated horticulture, have strong growth prospects.

“To realise these opportunities, we have prepared the Economic Development Strategy to ensure we are not only leveraging our competitive advantages, but also focusing on overcoming our weaknesses to support future growth in our Shire.

“This strategy represents an exciting new vision for Flinders Shire, focusing on realising potential growth.

“Together, we can improve the lives and livelihoods of our people and create long-lasting economic opportunities for future generations.”

Flinders Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Hari Boppudi said the Corporate Plan 2023-2028 identifies the approach Council will take over the next five years.

“For me, it is more than a legislative requirement for local government. It is an opportunity to confirm the community’s vision and understand their expectations on Council in realising this vision,” he said.

“The plan translates the community’s vision for the Flinders Shire and sets out clear objectives and outcomes, providing clear guidance of what needs to be done by Council to realise the opportunity that lays ahead of the community.

“I’d like to thank everyone who participated in the formation of this new Corporate Plan.

“Their input has been essential in establishing our priorities, our future action areas, and outcomes we need to achieve.

“I’m looking forward to working with our elected councillors, Council staff and the general community over the coming years as we deliver on the plan.”
