Tiny in nature, big in outback charm: Hughenden named finalist in Queensland’s ‘Top Tourism Town’ awards

Hughenden has once again been recognised as one of the premier Outback tourism destinations after being named as a finalist in this year’s Queensland ‘Top Tourism Town’ Awards.

The annual awards, presented by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC), recognise outstanding regional destinations that demonstrate a commitment to visitor excellence.

After an extensive judging process by a panel of tourism experts, Hughenden is now just one step away from being Queensland’s ‘Top Tiny Tourism Town’, with the public now invited to help decide the 2023 winner.

The nomination comes hot on the heels of the successful Hughenden Festival of Outback Skies, which saw a whopping 2,000 visitors flock to the Outback town in late April.

Flinders Shire Mayor Jane McNamara said the town was thrilled to be named as a finalist in the prestigious competition.

“This nomination is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our community in providing an unforgettable and exceptional visitor experience,” said Cr McNamara.

"The recent festival was a huge success, and we are proud to have once again showcased our town to visitors from all over Queensland and beyond.

“Whether you are looking for adventure or relaxation, Hughenden offers something for everyone.

“Our one-of-a-kind natural attractions and endless horizons, super-friendly easy-going locals, and of course our dinosaur history, means we are a must-visit destination on any trip to Outback Queensland.”

The town’s attractions include the stunning sunsets at Mount Walker, exciting camp drafts and race days, the breathtaking Porcupine Gorge, and the tranquil Hughenden Recreational Lake.

The winners of the awards are decided by public voting, which closes at 5pm on Wednesday 24 May.

Mayor McNamara urged everyone to cast their vote.

"We would be honoured to win this award and would greatly appreciate your support,” she said.

“If you, like us, think Hughenden should be Queensland’s ‘Top Tiny Tourism Town’, help us by taking a few minutes to vote.

“Help us showcase the best of Outback Queensland to the world - it would really mean a lot to us!”
