Palette of Skies: Artistic Fusion to illuminate Hughenden's Festival of Outback Skies

Back

The vibrant hues of the Outback will soon find a new canvas in the heart of Hughenden, as the town eagerly prepares to host the inaugural Palette of Skies: Artistic Fusion project as part of the esteemed Hughenden Festival of Outback Skies which takes place this weekend (3-5 May).

The ground-breaking arts project, spearheaded by Flinders Shire Council and lead artist Dr Simon Degroot, promises to be a mesmerising addition to the festival's line-up of cultural celebrations.

Palette of Skies: Artistic Fusion marks an exciting collaboration between students from LiveArt at Queensland College of Art and Design, Griffith University (QCAD,) and acclaimed lecturer and artist Dr Degroot.

Under Dr Degroot's guidance, students will journey to Hughenden to paint a new 65 square metre mural to be installed on the fence of the Flinders Discovery Centre.

Inspired by the breathtaking landscapes and unique flora of the Outback, the mural's design is expected to draw upon the iconic Flinders Poppy and wildflowers native to the region.

Abstract forms representing flowers, foliage, and stems will dance across the canvas, paying homage to the resilience and beauty of the Outback.

Students will also deliver a community workshop to discuss a new 52 square metre mural to be installed on the Flinders Library building, replacing the current damaged and soon-to-be decommissioned artwork.

Following this workshop, Flinders Shire Council will work with QCAD LiveArt students to develop a new artwork design that recognises the current artwork and incorporates material from the community workshop.

"Hughenden Festival of Outback Skies 2024 is a testament to our commitment to celebrating the rich tapestry of culture and artistry that defines our region," said Flinders Shire Council Mayor Kate Peddle.

"We are thrilled to welcome Dr Degroot and the talented students as they bring their vision to life through Palette of Skies: Artistic Fusion.

“This collaborative effort will pay tribute to the town's vibrant culture and serve as a lasting symbol of unity and creativity.”

Dr Degroot said the project was an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Outback, channelling its essence into a bold and captivating work of public art.

"Through Palette of Skies: Artistic Fusion, we aim to celebrate the boundless creativity that thrives in regional communities like Hughenden.”

This project was made possible by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, provided through Regional Arts Australia, administered in Queensland by Flying Arts Alliance.
